1. History of the Dubrovnik Cable Car

The Occupying French used to build many fortresses around Dubrovnik to defend it from any potential battle. And, like many defensive buildings, Fort Imperial has a strategic spot to protect the city.
2. Location of the Dubrovnik Cable Car
At the eastern entrance of the Old Town, you find the cable car station. The orange two cabins are capable of carrying up to 30 people. The cable cars scale up to Mount Srd in about three minutes, which is really fast!
The shortest way to reach the cable car station from Old Town is by walking the stairs from the Stradun. Then go on a one-minute walk across the Iza Grada parking lot towards the stairs underneath the cable car station.
In total, it takes about 7 minutes to reach the cable car station.
There are also two long ways from the Pile Gate, taking about 12 minutes. However, the path isn’t very steep, so you might find it a better alternative to going to the station.
For visitors coming from cruise ships and disembarking on Gruz harbour, you need to ride bus n°8 or a taxi, which will take you directly to the cable car station.
However, if you’re feeling active and want to go on foot, the distance between Gruz harbour and the Pile Gate is about 4,5 kilometers.

The cable car operates at different times, depending on the month of the year.
For your information, cable cars may be out of service for a short period, especially in bad weather. However, this happens only in the winter months in unfavorable weather conditions like strong winds.

6. What Is There to Do at The Top of Mount Srdj
For instance, the ride to the top with the cable car is already amazing! You will get to see the Old Town with its narrow streets and terracotta rooftops as it vanishes, and the blue Adriatic Sea.

Imperial Fort and the Museum of Contemporary History
If you feel the need to explore the landmark away from the cable car station, head to Fort Imperial. You can climb there to see the views from above and visit the museum.
The Imperial Fortress features a lovely museum in honor of the Homeland War. It’s actually one of the best museums to visit while you’re staying in the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic.’ The museum documents all the events of the Croatian War of Independence.
Hiking
The paved trail starts from the Imperial Fortress and ends at Strincjera Fortress. The 1300-meter path runs through a forest and farmland. And, you will see lovely views of the Adriatic Sea and the Elaphiti Islands on your way.
